War Defence Works

During World War II the Germans built defensive works to secure the entrance to the Varanger fjord. Russian bombers attacked the defences several times during the war.

It is possible to walk on soft heather on the plateau of Ekkeøy towatch bunkers and gun sites after the Germans.

If you are interested in war history, there are even larger defensive works farther east of Ekkeroy, near Kiberg (48 km) and by Hamningberg (92 km).
